Three Quick Ways to Increase Your Head Voice

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 | comments

n this post, I'm going to talk a little about the head voice -what it is, why you must develop it gradually as a singer and some tips you can start using right away to increase your head voice, not minding your gender.

A popular misconception about the this is that it is only used or to be used only by female singers. Foul!

Now that the head-voice is a necessity for female singers doesn't mean that it is irrelevant for male singers.

Though this kind of voice in male singers doesn't sound the same as that of their female counterpart, it is important a male singer know how to use it because learning how to use it constantly has a vital part to play in improving your vocal range.

For some genre of songs, the head voice is a must, especially classical songs.

Here are few tips on discovering and improving your head voice:

Imitating the birds: Yes, I mean those birds that always wake you up in the morning. Follow the birds in making that "hoot-hoot" sound (of an owl especially) or the "cuckoo" sound of the cuckoo bird. While you are making that sound, just forget about singing. In fact, pretend as if you're a small kid just making noises, but please don't do it in the presence of your in-laws.

After you've run that sound down path, run them up and down with the scale - go from the low-end of your vocal range to the high-end. This exercise is called a "siren" exercise because it sounds just like a siren.

Imagine you are smiling as you reach high notes.

This will help you access your headvoice. Remember you are smiling inwardly for yourself, not just spreading your lips anyhow and smiling to the public. This exercise will help you to keep your palette up high.

    Letter "N" Magic:

Singing the letter "N" while keeping your mouth close. I don't want to go too technical in explaining this, but it works magic.

    Practice, practice, practice!

The most important of the above tips is to practice using it often. Using the head voice can be mastered with continuous practice. Mind you, don't strain your voice too much in attempts to reach notes that are outside your voice range.
